Pollarding

Pollarding is a specific tree pruning technique that involves the regular removal of the upper branches and growth of a tree back to the main trunk or a set of lower branches. This practice results in a distinctive, somewhat harsh appearance, with a shortened main trunk and a dense head of foliage. Pollarding is typically performed on certain species of deciduous trees, such as willows, poplars, and planes, as well as some fruit trees.

Do you remove all wood from site?
Yes, all arisings from our work activities are removed from site as wood chip or logs. This is then taken to be recycled or used as 'product' i.e. logs wood.
Why use a tree surgeon?
Tree surgery is a dangerous and highly skilled activity. All our operatives are fully trained and experienced in all aspects of tree surgery. If in doubt always ask to see a tree surgeons qualifications, and associated paperwork. At LTS we can provide on request details of all individual qualifications, including; LTS public liability insurance, employers insurance and waste carriers license.
Will I need permission to have work carried out?
Sometimes trees can have a TPO - tree preservation order, this limits the type of work that can be done. You would need to contact your local authority for the relevant permissions and scope of works that would be allowed. Also trees can be within a 'conservation area', this is similar and will require permission from your local authority. We can assist with this process and advise accordingly. Any respectable tree surgeon will not carry out unnecessary or illegal work, at LTS we always check details of each tree before commencing any work. For details on TPO please visit the GOV website, alternatively please give us a call. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tree-preservation-orders-and-trees-in-conservation-areas
What time of year should I have tree work done?
We will always give the best advice when to undertake tree or hedge work. Generally for broad leaf trees this would be after leaf fall, however this is not always the case. For instance cherry is best pruned after flowering or fruiting so the the sap can help heal the wounds. A mulberry however may bleed too much sap so is best pruned in the winter when dormant. Hedges can generally be trimmed at any time.
Will the presence of nesting birds or bats cause a problem?
Any nesting bird is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It is illegal to disturb any nesting bird or bat roosts when working on a tree or hedge. Generally birds will nest from March until late August. Bats may well overwinter in older veteran trees if the conditions are correct. At LTS we approach each job on its individual merits with biodiversity and the environment playing a major factor in how we tackle the task in hand.
How much will the work cost?
While it may be possible in some circumstances to offer a rough estimate of the cost of tree surgery based on a photograph, it is generally necessary for our qualified tree surgeons to make a site visit, not only to view the tree and assess the access, but also to discuss the options open to you. From there we would provide a written quote, not an estimate, which we would honour. You would never be asked to pay anything extra for us to complete the task we quoted for.
